Class of 2020,

You graduate in uncertain times, under uncertain circumstances. But you are ready, and more than that, the world is ready for you. The lawyers of this nation are proud to have you join our ranks. We need your skills, your talent and your courage now more than ever.

As you contemplate the next phase of your life, I offer you insights from two great leaders; their words will mean more to you than mine.

First, if ever you are in doubt, whether on day five of your career or day 5,000, remember the advice of Bryan Stevenson (or, at least, the advice of his grandmother): “Always do the right thing, even when the right thing is the hard thing.”

But, more immediately, as you reflect on the difficult period we are living through and that you graduate in, should you feel anxious as you embark upon the great journey ahead of you, let the one and only Albus Dumbledore remind you that you are prepared and you are ready to “step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”* Enjoy the ride.

Best of luck and congratulations on this great accomplishment.
